Just for Feet!
A look at Reflexology

by Trish A. Scarborough LNMT, Certified Reflexologist

What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a science which deals with the principle that there are reflex areas (nerve endings) in the feet and hands which correspond to all of the glands, organs and parts of the body; including, the nervous system, digestive system, endocrine system, lymphatic system, muscles and joints. Stimulating these reflexes properly can help many health problems in a natural way, at type of preventative maintenance.

Reflexology is a respected modality in the natural health field and should not be confused with massage. Reflexology is a hands-on therapy applied to the feet, hands and/or ears. It is a wonderful alternative to a massage when a person is not comfortable with therapy applied to the body. It is non-evasive therapy exposing only the lower legs and feet. The client should wear comfortable non-binding clothes that give access to the lower leg and feet.

Reflexology should also compliment a massage session but keep in mind that these two therapies stand alone when considering effectiveness, they can achieve similar results. Massage and Reflexology are different in that Reflexology can have a direct effect on the internal organs and glands without touching the abdominal region. Like massage it is very relaxing and many people fall asleep during their session! A typical session will last 45-60 minutes.

Is Reflexology New?
The idea behind Reflexology is not new - in fact, it was practiced as early as 2300 B.C. by the Egyptian culture. Reflexology as we know it today was first researched and developed by Dr Eunice Ingham, the pioneer of this field. Her first book on the subject was published in 1938. Dr Ingram is credited with providing charts and "maps" to each nerve ending from the foot to its correlating point.

What does Reflexology do?
Reflexology is used primarily for relaxing tension. Doctors agree that over 75% of our health problems can be linked to nervous stress and tension. Reflexology improves our nerve and blood supply, and helps nature to normalize.

Can Reflexology make a condition worse?
No, it will not make any condition more acute. Reflexology helps to normalize body functions. A Reflexology session relaxes the stress that can affect your health.

SCIENTIFIC PROOF!! 2008
Japanese scientists using MRI scans observed energetic changes linking the corresponding areas. This scientific test was initially performed to discredit this modality but in-fact resulted in an affirmation.
